Aviation Week talks with the FAA Associate Administration for Aviation Safety, Peggy Gilligan, about the most pressing safety challenges and opportunities facing the FAA and the aviation industry. As safety chief, Gilligan is the responsible for setting, overseeing and enforcing safety standards for pilots, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, airlines, manufacturers and repair stations. She commands a workforce of more than 7,000 employees across the U.S. and a budget of more than $1 billion a year. She will be retiring from the FAA on Mar. 31 after a 37-year career at the FAA.
